"The character of reality is: τo κρείττoν, the overpowering."- Hans Blumenberg

About

Hi, my name is Amon Raun! I studied philosophy at the universities of Hamburg, Freiburg, and Aarhus with a special interest in the philosophy of Hans Blumenberg. In my master thesis, I analyzed the role of phenomenology in his anthropology, which - through recent posthumous publications - inevitably revealed itself as an underlying philosophical foundation tieing his work together. My interest primarily resolves around anthropology - or: the conditio humana. I am fascinated by the question, what it means to be human and the existential dimension to the discipline. What are the pragmatic procedures we apply to overcome the abyss?

Research

We never encounter the world 'as it is'; rather we encounter it through a distinct worldview. Following Blumenberg's approach of phenomenological anthropology, I want to view the shaping factors in our mental framing from an anthropological standpoint. Generally, humans constitute a world synthetically as an act of mind, producing an image that is essentially coherent. Nietzsche observed that humans have historically interpreted the world “according to our wish and will for veneration, that is, according to a need” (Nietzsche, 2001, §346). In my research, I aim to elaborate on the anthropological criteria that guide human constitution of cognitive systems and sets of beliefs through the distinct relation to reality human beings possess qua their nature. To achieve this, I am applying a form of synthetic philosophy, i.e. building a bridge between phenomenological anthropology, cognitive science, philosophy of mind and plitical psychology.
